Turning across a lane of traffic

Most drivers don't realise that NSW road rules allow them to drive in the bus lanes for up to 100m if  they are turning left. They are so scared of picking demerit point and a fine of $319 that they instead they do a dangerous and unpredictable turn across a lane of traffic.

Fortunately I was riding slowly and could stop in plenty of time but it highlights the problem with driver knowledge/training/awareness.
